Thank you Pet Naturals for sponsoring this blog post on Horses & Heels.
The holidays are quickly approaching and I’m excited for this festive season. It’s a time to take a break from work, enjoy spending time with loved ones and travel. Our usual California Christmas tradition of Joshua Tree in the desert has been put on hold for something different. This year, we will be flying from California to Ohio and then driving across the country back to Los Angeles. It’s going to be a fun trip for Adam, myself and Mango, of course.
Mango is no stranger to traveling. She’s flown more times than some people I know and is the perfect companion for road trips. She handles trips well, but she does get anxious about the thought of being left behind. Once she’s with us on a trip, she doesn’t like it if she has to stay home at her Nana’s house while we visit friends, or if she has to wait in a hotel room while we run a quick errand. This year Mango will be packing Pet Naturals Calming for her cross country adventure. We will be staying at strange hotels and unfamiliar places as we drive home. I want Mango to feel calm and relaxed the entire time on the road.
Calming chews help manage everyday stress. Ideally they should be given 30 minutes before a stressful situation. The chews are free of wheat, corn and artificial ingredients. One chew is recommended for dogs under 50lbs while, two is for dogs over 50lbs. It’s safe to give your dog an increased amount of 2-3 during times of increased stress. The non-drowsy formula will keep your pet calm without leaving them in a fog.
Flying with Your Dog
Mango has racked up her flight miles over the years and is a seasoned traveler. She experiences more anxiety while I’m packing my own suitcase. I thought I would share some tips for flying with your dog. Since Mango is small, she flys in cabin with me in a bag that goes under the seat in front of me. You can check with the airlines for sizing requirements. On the day of a flight, I always make sure Mango has a nice long walk or play session before. She eats her last meal about 12 hours before the flight, I will also take her water away a couple hours before we leave for the airport. In Mango’s travel bag, I’ll bring an empty water bottle with a flip lid for drinking (I fill it up after we pass through security), a bag of dog treats, poop bags, her leash, collar, and paperwork for the flight. Mango will usually sleep the entire flight.
The moment Mango sees her airport bag come out of the closet, she becomes anxious. If I place the bag on the floor, she’ll climb right in and give me the look that says – Don’t you dare leave without me. Inside my luggage, I’ll make sure to food for her trip, a couple of toys and some sweaters for cooler weather.
I’m very excited for this year’s holiday road trip!
