Outdoor living has never been so cozy.
Early this month Adam and I hit our one year mark living in our current rental. I recently finished decorating the patio just in time for summer. I originally shared our outdoor patio refresh when we first moved in. Check out that post to get an idea of what the space looked like before. I was proud of it, but I wanted it to feel like an outdoor living room and extension of the house.
We added an outdoor couch and metal shelves to the back wall and then layered rugs in front of the table to cover the concrete floor entirely. The rugs created a warm bohemian vibe, I’m thrilled with the way it turned out.
The trick with layering rugs is to select complimentary shades that work well together. It also helps to select a variety of textures especially when going boho.
These two gold hurricanes are actually candle holders from Pier 1. I learned quickly last summer that candles cannot handle the California heat. They melted all over so I decided to fill the glass with plants instead.
You can never have enough pillows in an outdoor space.
I stamped this floor pillow earlier in the year and it fits in well with the rest of the decor.
The couch is from IKEA and it fit perfectly in the back. I purchased the cushions from IKEA but then headed to Home Goods to find pillows to elevate the look. The mango wood tray is perfect for drinks.
This vintage orange and red Navajo rug is from my mom. It’s perfect for in front of the couch and adds a nice pop of color.
Plants and greenery are a must for any outdoor space. We used these metal shelves from IKEA to display succulents and decor.

I hope this space insipires you to decorate your own outdoor oasis for summer. Mango and I spend lots of quiet mornings out here working and it’s the perfect place for a lazy afternoon nap.

Hey! Have the outdoors elements (rain, sun, etc) caused a lot of damage over the years? Do you think this is a setup that requires certain upkeep? Or can you just layer a bunch of rugs and expect to be fine? Does the damage actually still look ok given the boho vibe?

Hi! There are a few months a year during the winter when it rains. When this happens, I’ll pull any small rugs (ones that are not technically outdoor rugs). Then I leave all the big ones out there. They do just fine. In fact, it’s going on 4 years and I’m just getting ready to buy new rugs and replace a few. I think that’s pretty good considering how much use I got out of them.
As far as upkeep, I oil the furniture a couple times a year and I leave blow and hose the patio as needed. I have some trees that shed leaves frequently and my horse makes dust so there’s that… but it does age well. In fact, I recently told a friend I was replacing a rug that was looking “sad” and he thought it was supposed to look like that.
