Winter citrus is in abundance and beautiful blood oranges are here. Enjoy this unique orange in a delicious sparkling cocktail.
Blood oranges are so pretty. On the outside of the peel you’ll immediately notice a maroon color that is a characteristic of this citrus. Once you cut into a blood orange, its dark flesh is unmistakable. The blood orange is a hybrid between the tangerine and pomelo. Blood orange tastes sweeter than most and has a citrus and raspberry flavor.
I have own a blood orange tree but it hasn’t produced any fruit yet, I’m anxiously waiting and hoping for oranges next season. My tree is in a pot since we rent and it’s been a little temperamental when it comes to care. I’m hoping one day to plant the tree when we can finally buy a house with horse property in the Rancho.
This easy cocktail combines vodka, fresh squeezed blood orange juice, and sparkling lime water. Three simple ingredients are all you need. This drink is low in sugar and calories too! I garnished my cocktail with a sprig of fresh rosemary.
Blood oranges are great for baking and making cocktails with because of their dark and unique hue. I previously made these blood orange and cherry mojitos for Halloween and they were a spooky and delicious drink.
- 2 ounces vodka
- 2.5 ounces fresh squeezed blood orange juice
- 4 ounces lime sparkling water
- Garnish with sliced blood oranges
- Combine ingredients into a shaker and mix well.
- Pour over ice in an individual glass and serve with garnishes.
I hope you enjoy this cocktail as much as I do! You can find blood oranges in season now at the farmer’s market or in your grocery store. They usually keep a small amount of them right by the citrus.
