I’ve hiked through the old zoo many times, but like most adventures in life – the view was better between the ears.
Last Friday Fira and I met up with our friends Britt and Louie for a morning ride. Our destination was the old zoo in Griffith Park. The zoo was opened in 1912 and closed in 1966, its new location is currently thriving and just a few miles from the old one. Fira and I had been once on our own but it was fun to have the company along the way. The entire ride was about four hours (round trip). We walked the entire time and stopped for plenty of photos – the ride could have been done much faster but our leisurely stroll was nice.
Above, I Fira and I paused on a hill and looked down on downtown Glendale.
I wore the October Sky kimono from Rod’s Western Wear that they sent me for fall. I love how the colors popped against Fira, it’s the perfect piece of autumn attire.
Fira and Louie at the zoo. These two were so sweet together.
Just climbing around some old cages and having fun with Fira!
Although the animals have been gone for a very long time, I wonder if the horses could sense that they use to be there. As always, Fira was very curious and enjoyed inspecting the cages.
We paused in front of the old monkey cages.
Best friends!
These are the big cages. They remind me of old ruins in a foreign country. There is something eerie, but peaceful about this area. It’s a great place to have a picnic or take a lazy stroll. Fira was very good on the ride but did spook a little from people running and yelling inside of the cages.
If you want to see more of our Los Angeles adventures on horseback, check out my blog post on riding to the Griffith Observatory. I’m going to keep sharing my favorite destinations here on the blog. Once it cools down some more, I’ll be riding to the Bronson Bat Caves and Hollywood sign!

That looked like a fun ride. I’d have never guessed the old zoo is open to the public – and horses!
