Thank you Perdue® for sponsoring this post.
I grew up on a small farm in Ohio and it wasn’t something I really appreciated until I was older and grown up. Sure, I enjoyed having ponies and kittens to play with as a child, but I didn’t always agree with my chores. Tasks such as weeding the garden, picking peas, husking corn, and snapping green beans were just a part of the daily summer routine. Almost everything I ate came from the farm, including our meat. We raised cows, pigs, chickens, and ducks. I lived the farm to table lifestyle my entire life up until I moved away from home. Fresh food matters to me and so does where it came from.
I don’t have the space to raise my own food here in Los Angeles, but it’s certainly something I am still very passionate about. I believe animals being raised for food should be well cared for.
That’s why I was thrilled to be selected to talk about how Perdue® is changing the chicken industry. Perdue is working hard to take the steps to be more forward-thinking in raising chickens for food. They are striving to create a set of practices consumers can feel good about.
Perdue is going beyond just providing basic food and water for their animals; they consider the environment for their chickens as well.
Perdue documents its animal care progress against a globally accepted standard for animals called, “The Five Freedoms”.
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury or disease
- Freedom to express normal behaviors
- Freedom from fear and distress
Recently, Perdue Foods hosted its 3rd Annual Animal Care Summit in Salisbury, Maryland on July 11th and 12th. They joined together animal care experts, customers, advocates, farmers, along with Perdue leadership for a discussion about the advancements in animal care. Going forward Perdue is welcoming consumers to review its progress in animal care and new plans.
Its planning like this that I can get behind. When you shop for Perdue, you know your food came from a better place. In a world filled with technology, we should be using it to do better. I’m glad Perdue is!
I was selected for this opportunity as a member of CLEVER and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.
