Yesterday was a bad day, I lost a pony, a friend, a champion, a family member. RIP Pirate’s Painted Treasure, there will never be another like you. I will keep this short, because I know I will kill my lap top if I cry over the keys any more. There is also no way I could EVER express how much he meant to me in such a short post. Pirate entered my life when I was just nine, he was just a $500 pony that no one wanted. But I wanted him & he changed my life forever, once I won him over & showed him that I was boss Pirate showed me unconditional loyalty.
He was trained to do everything; barrels, poles, jumping, dressage, flat work, reining, driving. He did it all & he did it well, Pirate could tell what he needed to do by the bit we put in his mouth. People always wanted to buy him, my dad always joked & said sell him but I promised Pirate we never would. & I kept that promise.
He lived a good life, I gave him a good life & I have a lot of wonderful memories & lots of scrap books filled with photos & glitter.

So sorry about your pony. I had a pony, too and I can’t remember not having her because I was so young when we got her. She died when I was in college and my dad called me to come home so we could bury her. That was 40 years ago and I still think of her but am glad I had the memories and years I had with her. #hanginthere!
Raquel says
Thank you Ginger, it’s always rough to lose an animal that you love
Melody says
I’m sorry for your loss.
I know how an unwanted pony can change your whole life, I still have my “old man’ who is almost 40. Right now he is the babysitter for my 18 month old.
Just remember he is young again and happy and you will see him again
Raquel says
Awwww Pirate was only 30 & I wished he had another 10 years. Give your “old man” an extra hug today for me
Suzie Salmon says
Girl, my heart is breaking for you! I am so sorry you lost your cherished friend. I know that you will never forget him or how much he meant to you. I also know you will grieve, but I hope you move quickly towards smiling when you think of him!
Big Hugs,
Suzie
Raquel says
Thank you Suzie, I have millions of good memories. I know it will take time but I was lucky to have him in my life

I’m so sorry. It’s so difficult to lose the animals we love. Sometimes our very best friends are the ones who can’t talk.
Raquel says
I agree with that Erica, animals make the best of friends & are truly irreplaceable

Oh I’m so sorry! It’s the worst feeling when you have to let go of a cherished horse friend, and worse when you have to make the decision to put them down. I know how you’re feeling, and offer all my sympathy. But treasure those memories and photos, so Pirate will live on in your heart forever.
Raquel says
Thank you, it was tough. He was old but always in great health. I just keep wishing I would have known & took him for one last ride
Ashley says
Hey girl! So sorry to here about Pirate! I know how hard it can be after losing one myself. Just try to remember the good memories and how great of a time you had together! ::hug:::
Raquel says

Aaaaww Raquel, I am so sorry for your lost. I was teary eyed reading this. It is really something how we grow so attached to our animals and love them like our children. I remember when I had to put my dog down because of cancer, I cried everyday for two weeks. And still yrs and a new dog later, I think of him often.
The wonderful thing about this is that you loved him when no one else wanted him and he knew it. Which is why he was so loyal he loved you back.
I hope that your heart heals soon.

I am so sorry. Your Pirate looked just like my horse. I lost her long ago, but I still think of her lots.
Fanny says
Raquel I am so sorry about your Pirate. We all have such periods in our life to endure , it makes us grown in our person and it allows us to know ourselves better. We have to give it a place and try to think about with positive thoughts. You look like a wonderful person, I wish you all the best ….. hugs x
Grace says
Oh Raquel I’m so sorry! It’s amazing the love we have for our pets and how they really do become members of our family! I still miss my old dog 🙁 I hope time will heal all wounds 🙁
Raquel says
Thank you Grace, it’s always so tough when you lose an animal, you get so attached & they become part of you.

I’m a new follower of your blog, and the picture of your painted pony caught my eye! I’m so sorry for your loss…Pirate was a beautiful and sounds like, much loved member of the family!

Just saw this and I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your special pony Raquel. I know how you feel. I had to put my first horse down at the age of 34 and I had owned her for 26 years. I learned everything from that horse. She has been gone for 6 years now and I still think about her most every day and compare every horse to her (its hard not to do). I hope that you can take comfort in knowing that you gave your pony a great life and you will always cherish your special bond that you had with him. You are one lucky girl to be able to have had such a great partnership with your pony. Not many people get to experience that. Sending wishes of comfort your way 🙂
Raquel says
Thank you Celine, it means a lot to me. I know there are plenty of other people who experience it all the time, but you are right he set the bar pretty high. I do the comparison thing too & I feel like no one can top him. He will definitely be missed but I do have so many amazing memories.

I just saw your post. I am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately it’s part of the joy of loving a horse. I had to put down my 3 month old colt this year and it was heart wrenching. He somehow broke his leg playing in the pasture. My heart goes out to you. I’m glad you have so many memories of him. I know I will never foregt any of the horses that have touched my life. They are truely God’s blessing.
Miriam Neville says
I’m so sorry for the loss of your pony, Pirate! I’m sure Pirate loved you just as much and felt lucky for having you in his life too! The memories you made with him will last throughout your lifetime.
Judith wood says
I feel your pain tonight; horses are such big animals, they leave a huge void in our lives when they leave us; the memories will outshine the sadness and a promise kept. Horses are every bit as family as our kids are; when they hurt, we hurt; my thoughts are with you.
Raquel says
Thank you Judith, that is so kind of you & your words mean a lot.
