Keep your horse entertained in the stall with this toy!
The other day I received Fira’s latest package in the mail, a large stall ball with holes. In my newest attempt to keep my easy keeper occupied and grazing longer, I bought this ball. I shared a couple videos of Fira using her ball on Instagram and my DMs immediately blew up. Everyone wanted the scoop on this new toy. For those of you who just want the link to purchase it’s linked below.

This is the large size ball. I was able to fill it with one small flake of hay. I simply twisted off the top, stuffed in the hay and brought it out to Fira’s stall. The process of filling it with hay can be a little messy, but it’s over in just a few minutes. Technically this isn’t marketed as a slow feeder, but it’s exactly what I’m using this for. It’s free from metal and keeps your horse active and moving as they eat.
The holes are large enough that a horse cannot fit its hoof through the ball (this might be too big for minis and small ponies) and the hay does not fall out immediately.
Normally a flake of this size lasts Fira about 30 minutes. With the stall ball, it takes her about an hour and a half. Plus there is a little additional clean up time that she will spend roaming her stall to pick up scraps. If you horse wastes hay once it touches the ground, this isn’t the ball for you. The ball is great for a stall or a large dry lot. I make sure to clean up any manure in Fira’s stall before giving her this ball in case she pushes it into her bathroom corner. I also wouldn’t use this toy in the mud. Use your best judgement and common sense for giving this to your horse.
A very happy and occupied pony.
The overall quality of the ball is nice. The plastic is heavy duty, but it’s a little pricey. I had been on the fence about buying one of these. They do come in smaller sizes, but I knew I wanted the biggest one. Now that I’ve taken the plunge and bought the ball, I’m thrilled. I plan on using it during lunch time to keep Fira grazing longer. My next question is how long will this ball last? I’ll definitely keep you posted.

My horse has in/out at will to a 20 acre pasture that has year round grazing, though I supplement hay in the colder months. I can’t see him working too hard to get hay before abandoning for easier to access food. But I could see him carrying it outside and dropping it into the mud to make a statement! He likes to walk off with his feed tub too. Overall that’s a good idea for some horses. I hadn’t heard of it before, thanks for sharing!
