The sun is out and so are the flies! Take control around the barn with some of my favorite products.
Summer is just around the corner. If you haven’t already started thinking about fly control, this is a friendly reminder. Fly season is extra long in Southern California, it slowly starts in April and sometimes lingers through November or December. There are tons of products out there that offer promising results, yet not all of them deliver.
I buy the following items on repeat every year; a good fly mask, fly spray and fly predators.
Fly Masks
Fira has extremely sensitive eyes. They can get a little weepy and run from the bright sun. I need a mask that offers UV protection and covers her ears. For that reason, I cannot say enough good things about Cashel. Their masks hold up, keep the bugs away from her eyes and prevent them from running. The Cashel Crusader mask with a long nose is nice for horses with pink skin that are prone to sun burn.
Fly Spray
I’ve tried a lot of fly spray over the years. I have two kinds I really like. Up first is Whole Horse. It’s an all natural spray that actually works. It also smells amazing. My other preferred spray is Pyranha’s Wipe N Spray. It’s not natural so that might be a negative for some, but again – it works.
Fly Control
Masks and spray help keep the pests away, but what actually kills them? Say hello to Fly Predators. The “predators” are live insects that leave humans and livestock alone. They help eliminate flies around the barn. If you haven’t bought these yet – get them now! It’s best to start earlier in the spring before the fly population gets out of control. You do need to re-order them every month or so to help stay on top of the pest control.
These are my secret weapons for summer bug control! Fira and I are wishing you a pest free summer!

I love the Cashel Crusader masks. I have two donkeys that get eaten alive by flies. Cashel has the Crusader mask for long ears. It works great as it protects their long sensitive ears and has the nose guard. Now if I can only find something for their legs. Also if you use fly sheets Turtle Neck has the best sheet around and they have a super warranty.
