A neglected side patio is given new life with a few simple pieces.
I never planned on sharing our side patio off the kitchen. It has always been our “forgotten corner” or a place where I stored random things like extra shavings or the ladder. I never went out there or tried to fix it up. I loved (and still love) the patio off my office and how far that has come along. Last year I bought Adam a grill for his birthday and that prompted the use of this neglected space. I knew I didn’t want any grilling to be done on the main patio – plus it’s a long walk from the kitchen. It made sense to use this area for grilling since the kitchen door is right there. After I assembled the grill and put it on the patio space, I knew I had to do something to fix up the area.
Before
I didn’t really document this space with photos, so here’s just one photo I took. This gives you a view of it when the grill was first set up. The part that bothered me the most was the uneven gravel and pavers. Weeds were constantly growing through and it just didn’t look nice. A new load of gravel and/or some stones could have fixed this – but I rent so I had to do something inexpensive and not alter the place. Rugs to the rescue! Just like the other patio, I decided to hide the floor since I couldn’t fix it. I raked the gravel, rearranged pavers and made a flat surface. Three rugs later, we now have a cozy place. You can keep your shoes off here now and it feels very welcoming.
Once the rugs were down, it was time to design a sitting area. Adam and I picked up these outdoor chairs from Target last year on clearance. We got them at a steal of a deal and love them. The chairs are really comfortable and well made. The cushions dry out if they get left in the rain and I often just hose them off to clean them. You can shop the entire Henning Patio Collection right here.
I also trimmed the bushes and cleaned up the leaves to make this area look neat and tidy. In the future, I’ll probably add some planters, throw a few pillows and that perfect end table. For now, it’s a happy little space that Adam and I enjoy sitting on for lunch and morning coffee.
I wanted to share this happy space now that warmer weather is here (in Southern California). If you are thinking about getting your patio ready for spring, I highly recommend a trip to Target. 😉 I also wanted to share this mini makeover to show you what you can do with just a few rugs and some chairs. There are more great outdoor furniture options for summer available at Globo Surf.

I look forward to sharing more updates from this cozy little corner in the future, stay tuned!
