When it comes to equestrian fashion, this blog certainly shows that there is no shortage of inspiration to be had out there. Ranging from a host of equestrian/Western-inspired accessories down to finely made beautiful leather boots, there are many ways to look good while paying homage to our beloved pastime.
However, perhaps the pinnacle of equestrian fashion can be found in a number of equestrian events that also double as style showcases. Below are just a few:
Dubai World Cup
Held annually since 1996 at the Meydan Racecourse, the Dubai World Cup is notable not only for its thrilling races but also the extravagant Style Stakes contest it holds on the side. This fashion competition has categories like “Best Dressed Lady”, “Best Hat” and even “Best Dressed Couple”. Some of the competitors include fashion designers like Nader Tearab (1/2 of 2019’s best-dressed couple) and prizes such as Diane von Furstenberg vouchers are at stake, which shows this is one event where you’ll definitely need to bring your fashion A-game.
Royal Ascot
Another event where you’ll need to dress to impress is Royal Ascot, England’s famous race meeting attended by none other than Her Majesty The Queen. In their piece on this traditional event, bwin Horse Racing News describes the Royal Ascot as a five-day event that takes place in late June every year and presents the best opportunity to flaunt summer fashion in England. Of course, the presence of Royalty only denotes that the utmost elegance is a must for this elaborate event. Yet, it’s also worth mentioning that each area in the event has a different look and feel.
For example, the Royal Enclosure and the Queen Anne Enclosure will obviously have a more formal feel with hemlines just above the knee and nothing off-shoulder or asymmetric. In contrast, the summer picnic/music-filled vibes of the Village and Windsor Enclosures allow for a bit more creative liberty. This is where you’ll often see bohemian accessories and zany hats. So, you may want to pack multiple outfits if you’re planning to attend next year.
Melbourne Cup
Akin to the style competition at the aforementioned Dubai Cup, the Melbourne Cup also has its equivalent in the form of the Myers Fashion on the Field contest. A rundown on the best outfits from the cup’s last edition by Business Insider notes that bright colors and prints appeared quite frequently, with the winner of the contest donning a bright-red midi-length pencil skirt and a jauntily perched straw boater hat to boot. One of the runners-up had on a floral red fascinator to go with their stunning emerald green frock, signifying that this is just one place where the fashion is as lively as the races.
Kentucky Derby
Finally, the Kentucky Derby is described by Town and Country as the premier preppy fashion event of the year. Here, lively colors also play a part but perhaps nothing will complete/dictate the rest of your Kentucky Derby ensemble more than a hat. Hats are not only a long-standing tradition with the Kentucky Derby but they have also been said to bring good luck. Even one of our previous posts entitled ‘Fabulous Floppy Hats’ mentions how the event is a great excuse to finally wear a hat.
While wide-brimmed hats are popular, and offerings like an Ombre-striped piece from Nordstrom or luxurious pillbox hats from designer Marzi mean there’s no limit to how creative you can get. Alternatively, you could also wear a fascinator as they also come in a wide variety of designs – the choice is yours.
